Christmas Light Conundrum

Posted by Nate On December - 28 - 20081 COMMENT

As it gets closer to New Year’s Day, more and more people will begin to take down their holiday light displays.  I know I usually like to have it put away by then because I’m done looking at it, at least for another year.  This year I put up very few lights because the house we’re renting has extensive gutters and aluminum siding.  On top of that, I don’t have a ladder that will allow me to get too crazy with the decorations.  I also noticed that several strings of my lights don’t work.

I’ve been wanting to switch over to LED light strings but am waiting for the cost to come down a little and for my strings to quit working.  If you’re in the same conundrum, wanting to switch over but not sure what to do with the old lights, you should check out this Christmas Light Recycling Program.  Holiday LED’s will recycle the old strands you mail them and give you a 15% off coupon for new strings of LED lights.  That’s a pretty cool deal and a great way to properly dispose of your old lights.

Have you made the switch to holiday LED light sets yet?  If so, what do you think?  If not, what’s keeping you from doing it?

Stuffing the Mailbox

Posted by Nate On December - 20 - 20083 COMMENTS

By now your mailbox has probably seen the biggest stuffing of the year, brimming over with cards and letters from family and friends both near and far.  But did you know there is a way to recycle all those cards instead of just tossing them in the trash?

You can cut the fronts off of the cards you received and send them to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.  The children can make and sell new cards from the old ones they receive and of course raise money for a wonderful program.  Just mail your card fronts to:

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, 100 St. Jude’s Street, PO Box 60100, Boulder City, NV 89006

Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of all those paper coffee filters you might use to make your pot of coffee every morning?  Our last coffee maker required a special kind of paper filter.

AZ Renewable Energy Project Goes Online

Posted by Nate On June - 19 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

Last week, Arizona’s newest renewable energy project went online and started generating enough electricity to supply about 9,000 homes.  Renegy’s Biomass Power Plant is located near Snowflake, AZ.  The plant takes forest waste generated from thinning projects, chips it up, dries it and then burns it in a boiler more than 10 stories tall.  Renegy claims that the process is 98% cleaner burning then if forest crews just burned the slash piles like they normally do.  Plus, we’re getting electrcity out of it.  Some of the first fuel that came to the plant is actually being cleaned out of the devastating Rodeo-Chediski burn area in Arizona’s eastern White Mountain region.  The plant has about a 2 year supply of wood chips already spread across 120 acres of land and expects there will be plenty more fuel coming from forest waste over the years.

The plant actually sits next to the old Abitibi pulp paper mill.  The plant takes all of the recycled paper from the Phoenix area and turns it into new paper.  Some of the recycled paper pulp can’t be reused again so that is normally sorted out and dumped into a landfill in the area.  But now, that waste paper that can’t be used again is dried into chips and burned along with the wood chips.  It creates another steady fuel supply that would normally just go to waste.  Both APS and SRP are purchasing power from the Snowflake Biomass Power Plant which I think is a great demonstration of renewable energy ideas we need to pursue full speed right now.

To read more about Renegy or their new plant in Snowflake, AZ head to their website.

Home Sweet Home Demonstrates the 3-R’s

Posted by Nate On March - 13 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

Reduce, reuse and recycle…we all know the now popular mantra.  It was driven into my head as a kid in elementary school every Earth Day and consequently has urged me to turn into the “greenie” I am today.  When it comes to recycling we usually don’t think of building our homes out of recycled materials.  But one Mississippi grandma took the idea to a whole new level.  After a storm practically demolished her wood-framed house, she had another idea that could just take off.  Check out her high-flying home and maybe it will provide you with a little inspiration for your next recycling project!
