It's Easy Being Green

A hot spot to discuss living life while going green

My wife and I are Zonies, born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona also known as the Most Western Town. In 2008 we uprooted ourselves from our home in Flagstaff, Arizona, packed a vintage Winnebago Motorhome with our possessions and trucked 1800 miles to my new job in Evansville, Indiana: The River City. We are now a family of three, learning to live our lives as sustainably as possible. Stay awhile to laugh and cry over our trials and tribulations and learn how easy we have found it to be green.

Going Amish for Moses

We’ve only been staying in Lawrence County, Tennessee for a week but already I think word of me has spread like wildfire through the local Amish community. With each passing horse and buggy, I can just imagine the exchanges between community members. Maybe it’s a tip of the straw hat or a certain knot used to hitch their horse to the post. It could also be the fact that I’ve now pulled into nearly a dozen Amish farms and stopped several buggy drivers asking for one apparently odd... (more...)

Vegan Elitism

Posted by Nate On August - 18 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

We didn’t just fall off the turnip truck yesterday nor is this our first visit to The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee. We sure got smacked with a healthy dose of vegan elitism though and I’m still reeling from it. When The Farm, a hippie commune developed by a caravan of bus traveling hippies was originally established in the early 1970’s, veganism ruled. The commune is no longer as active or bound by the original ideals as it once was. The commune’s population boomed to about... (more...)

Roughing it at The Farm

We have officially put down our temporary roots at one of our favorite places to visit: The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee. This old hippie commune is where our darling daughter Everly was born thanks to the world-renowned midwives here. Now we are awaiting the arrival of our second daughter, Adalyn who is due on the 23rd. During Everly’s birth we stayed in a one-room cabin next door to our midwife’s house. You can read our birth story here. This time around we’re staying in a much... (more...)

Garden Update

Posted by Nate On July - 31 - 20114 COMMENTS

This has certainly been a challenging gardening year, at least for us here at the Half-Acre Homestead. Not only do we have significantly less time to work in the garden (due to the impending arrival of baby girl #2 in the next few weeks) but the weather has just been a bear this year. All varities of squash have set nicely this year but so far nothing has matured. Every plant has been attacked by squash vine borers and died. We had an early tease of a warmup early this spring but then the weather... (more...)

Healthy Vending

Posted by Nate On July - 17 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Is it truly possible that a tide of change is surging in to the fattest city in the nation? I think it might just be possible with the addition of local farm markets, a new Fresh Market boutique grocery and one of the most shocking signs of change I’ve seen yet: a vending machine with healthier snack options. A new, healthier vending machine located at Eastland Mall This new Fresh! vending machine is located in the eastern entrance portal to Eastland Mall, right next to the Old Navy store.... (more...)

Martha’s Green Clean Fail

Posted by Nate On July - 13 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

*NOTE – I did not receive any products or services for this blog post* No question about it, my excitement was far more noticeable as Homestead Hottie opened up a gift box mailed to her. Packed inside, nearly a half-dozen bottles of Martha Stewart’s clean products, everything from glass cleaner, toilet bowl scrub, laundry detergent and dish detergent. Martha claims her product line if “effective, responsible and safe” with most being 99% plant and mineral based cleaning products.... (more...)
